Academic Advising

All students are assigned an Academic Advisor upon their acceptance into the university. HSU offers most of its courses online; thus, the majority of communication also occurs electronically or by phone. The Academic Advisor’s role is to guide, support, and to refer matriculated students to additional resources. The initial contact begins with a collaborative approach whereby the advisor seeks to understand the student’s short and long-term academic and career aspirations. Suggested course selection is guided by careful consideration of these student goals. In an effort to support and get the most out of the degree program, student academic progress is consistently monitored. Referrals to internal and external resources are made as needed or requested. While students are ultimately responsible for knowing university policies and procedures, advisors have interpretative knowledge and can provide additional guidance, if needed.

In order to satisfy student needs communication between advisor and student is encouraged a minimum of three times per academic year for active students. For students on academic probation, communication is required every time the student is enrolled in a term. Students are responsible for keeping their advisor up to date with any changes to their academic plans of study.
