Capital and Development Specialist Program

Capital and Development Specialist Courses

Formerly known as Shelter Resource Development Certificate Program
Animal shelters often face serious challenges of short supply in two key areas of resources: money and people. Is your organization having trouble building these resources and using them to their best advantage?

HSU's School of Continuing Education Capital and Development Specialist program focuses on practical and effective ways to solicit funding and secure good people. The courses will help you build your organization’s capacity to make the most of every dollar and every person on your team. The program is highly encouraged for board members, executive directors, development or fundraising directors, and anyone involved in senior management of a shelter or humane organization.

Students will emerge from this program with the knowledge and tools to create an animal-welfare organization that embraces effective leadership, fiscal responsibility, and growth in funding capabilities. The Capital and Development Specialist program will examine best practices surrounding board governance and the board/executive director relationship; IRS regulations and methods for creating systems for fiscal oversight; and marketing and fundraising strategies for funding sustainability.

Three courses are required to earn the Capital and Development Specialist designation. Courses may be taken in isolation without signing up for the entire program.
