Leslie Irvine Joins HSU Faculty

Sociologist Leslie Irvine, author of the path-breaking new book, Filling the Ark: Animal Welfare in Disasters, has joined the Department of Animal Studies at Humane Society University as a faculty member. In Winter Term 2010 she will be teaching Sociology of Animal Abuse.
Irvine (pictured with her feline companion Punim) is Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Her research focuses on the roles of animals in society. She has studied animal sheltering, human-animal relationships, and animal selfhood. Irvine’s If You Tame Me: Understanding our Connection with Animals, received the Distinguished Scholarship Award from the Animals & Society Section of the American Sociological Association.
For over a decade Irvine has volunteered at the Humane Society of Boulder Valley walking dogs, assisting in the veterinary clinic, and helping out wherever possible. In 2006, the Humane Society recognized her dedication with their highest honor, the Humanitarian Award.
